Pupil Premium Statement
The Government provides the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG), which is additional to main school funding,?to address the current underlying inequalities between children who are disadvantaged due to identified factors and those who are not. It is intended to?ensure that a set amount of?additional funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
Factors are
- registration for free school meals (FSM), either now or in the previous 6 years
- looked after children, who are in the care of an English local authority
- children who have ceased to be looked after by a local authority because of adoption, a special guardianship order or child arrangements order
- children of Services personnel
At Kelsall Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to ensuring that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils, in particular those of vulnerable or socially disadvantaged pupils.? The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is used to ensure that all PPG pupils are supported in making progress.? This progress is carefully and regularly tracked by our and there is an expectation that over their time at Kelsall, the majority of PPG pupils will?reach the expected standard?in English and Maths. Where we identify that PPG pupils are falling behind the expected levels of progress, or where we feel they are not achieving their potential, which may be more than this, targeted literacy and numeracy intervention programmes are delivered by their class teacher and supported by a teaching assistants in order to
- close the gap in attainment for PPG pupils in core subjects
- maintain high expectations and standards for PPG pupils, ensuring targeted support is also available to stretch our most able
- ensure that all pupils are given the same opportunities to develop their potential and participate in extra-curricular activities in and outside of school
Supporting Disadvantaged Pupils
We believe that one of the major barriers to learning for some of our more vulnerable pupils is the emotional issues they may face and the effect this has on their attitude to school.? We prioritise the use of our Pupil Premium Grant to not only support pupils academically through focused literacy and numeracy interventions, but also to support them emotionally to reach their potential. We have a full time Learning Mentor, Mrs Whiteside, who works alongside class teachers and support staff to enable and provide bespoke support for the needs of individuals. Social and emotional work is closely linked in to each child’s academic support work. Our Learning Mentor also provides an additional point of contact for parents and carers of our disadvantaged pupils.
Supporting Curricular and Extra-curricular activities
In order to narrow the gap for our PPG children, it is important that they have access to the same extra-curricular activities and residential school visits as the rest of their cohort.? Pupil Premium is therefore used to subsidise extra-curricular activities and residential trips for those pupils who qualify for Free School Meals.
Is your child eligible for the Pupil Premium?
All children who currently qualify for?free school meals?based on their family circumstances are entitled to pupil premium. This applies if you receive any of the following benefits:
- Income Support
- Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Child Tax Credit but not Working Tax Credit and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190
- The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
- Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit - if?you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

Children who are or have been in care, and children who have a parent who is or was in the armed forces, are also entitled to pupil premium. We rely on parents sharing this information with us when they join our school, for the grant to be claimed for your child.
In addition, pupils who have qualified for free school meals on the above grounds in the past, but are no longer eligible, continue to receive pupil premium for the next six years. If you join our school and this applies to you, please inform the office. If your child qualifies for free school meals or has at any point in the past six years, it’s important that you tell school?– even if they're in Reception or KS1 and receive universal school meals for infant pupils, or are in KS2 and take a packed lunch – as this enables them to claim pupil premium.
Schools are responsible for recording the children who are eligible for pupil premium in their annual school census - you don't have to do anything once school has been informed, other than making sure you return any paperwork that relates to the benefits you receive or your child's entitlement to free school meals.
