Welcome to Year 6!
What another strange year we are having!
It was so lovely to welcome the children back in September, where we had a brilliant start to the year (even with restrictions in place).
This year, the children’s learning has revolved around a selection of fantastic books, which link all of our literacy, STEAM and Topic lessons together.
Our first term had us learning all about Black Lives Matter through the book ‘Of Thee I Sing’ by Barack Obama where we learnt about some amazing Black Heroes and historical figures from Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman, to Matthew Henderson and Jackie Robinson, before moving on to learn about World War 2 through the book ‘Star of Fear, Star of Hope’. We had lots of exciting learning opportunities during these two topics, including our STEAM week where we made periscopes, baked WW2 cakes, learnt Morse Code and even had a WW2 military style assault course, where we got extremely muddy but had so much fun!
When it came to the Spring term, we once again found ourselves at home, remote learning. The year 6s took this in their strides and carried on with their fantastic learning, going above and beyond with their effort, hard work and determination and we are so proud of you all!
We are now at the start of the year 6s final term at Primary School (I'm already preparing for the tears!) and although there may be some changes to some of the usual 'year 6' activities, we aim to make this final term as special and memorable as usual.
The summer term brings with it the annual Make a £ grow week, as well as buddy trips and end of year performances and we can't wait to celebrate this final term with you.
This term our Literacy topic focuses on ‘Manfish’ by Jennifer Berne, about the life of Jacques Cousteau. We will learn all about his life and the lives of other explorers as well as learning about coasts in geography and the human body in science.
If you have anything that you feel could help with our topic then please let us know.
For any more information, please find the year 6 Fact File and curriculum map attached. I have also attached the KS2 common exception word spellings for children to practise alongside their usual spelling homework.
