Cedar Class are lost at sea...

Class: Year 6 - Cedar Year: 2013-2014

As you already know, this year Cedar Class are following them theme 'Planet Ocean'. We have already done lots of work on the coast-line and the impact that the ocean has upon it. Now we have moved to a new focus- planning a trip where we would take to the ocean and sail around the world.

We have used the text 'Kensuke's Kingdom' to support our work and just like the main character, Michael, we planned a trip around the world. We worked out the distances between the countries that we would sail to and used this to calculate the length of our trip. We have also researched the countries that we would visit and made an itinerary for the trip.

Unfortunately, Michael's trip doesn't quite go to plan and during a terrible storm, he is thrown overboard into the ocean. After spending hours alone in the cold water, he finds himself washed up on an island. In light of this we have turned our focus to 'Island Living' and are concentrating on how we would survive in a similar situation- living off the land and the sea.

In line with our whole school focus upon the photographer 'Yann Arthus-Bertrand' we are looking at a photograph of Phi Phi Le, near Phuket island, Thailand (8°00’ N, 98°22’ E) as a stimulus for our work. The Phi Phi archipelago is 24.8 miles (40 km) off the coast of Thailand and has many similar features to Michaels Island. Now we know what is there we have been able to work towards creating a survival plan and have welcomed Jason Day, of Northern Lights Training, to help us develop these skills!

Please take a few minutes to look at our first surivial skills session!
