Year 4 - Elm 2019 - 2020

Welcome to Elm Class!

Class Teacher: Mrs White

Teaching Assistant: Mrs C Watson

Hello and welcome to Elm class.

In our class Mrs White, Miss Beswick (Associate Teacher) and Mrs Watson will be teaching us. Mr Clayton will be working with us every Monday.

                             Little People, Big Dreams

This year, the Little People, Big Dreams books will be the inspiration for our curriculum. This series of books tell the inspirational stories of ordinary people who achieved something amazing, often overcoming personal adversity along the way.

This term we will be looking at:

Frida Kahlo (Autumn 1)

Charles Dickens (Autumn 2)

Swimming lessons will also take place this term, starting Friday 6 September and ending Friday 20th December. We have been advised by the swimming staff that no children can swim if wearing earings. If your child wears earings, then please ensure they do not wear them to school on Fridays. Thank you.

As mathematicians we are learning to…

  • Develop our problem solving and reasoning skills in all areas of our mathematical learning.
  • Recognise Place Value of each digit in a 4-digit number and solve problems with increasingly large positive numbers.
  • Solve addition and subtraction two step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.
  • Measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure
  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12

As writers we are learning to…

  • Use the text Weslandia to practice use of nouns and adjectives.
  • Use a wide range of punctuation accurately and consistently.
  • Write a non-chronological report about Frida Kahlo, using pronouns to make meaning clear and avoid repetition.
  • Use The Jabberwocky poem to explore the use and impact of powerful verbs and poetic devices and practice using them in our own poetry.
  • Identify main and subordinate clause accurately and consistently and use a wider range of conjunctions to extend sentences with more the one clause when writing a letter to Charles Dickens.
  • Use techniques to engage the reader when writing a story inspired by Oliver Twist.
